Chapter President’s Message

Dear Sigma Beta Beta Members,
As my 2017 – 2019 presidency comes to an end on June 30th, 2019, I want to thank each of you for your continued commitment to Sigma! Your enthusiasm, talents, and memberships have worked to strengthen our chapter and Sigma internationally.

In the last two years, we have inducted new members and opened our meetings to all members! We have collaborated with our fellow Houston Sigma Chapters! Our volunteer opportunities have included: Annual Elinta McClain Baby Shower, Pop Tops for the Ronald McDonald House, TWU food bank, and clothes for children in low-income schools.

Several of our members have presented posters and oral presentations at Sigma conferences and many other interdisciplinary and nursing conferences over the last two years. Our monthly book club continues to be very popular.

We have had some outstanding events: we have initiated a mentorship and a leadership intern program. At our Spring Parry Distinguished lectureships, we heard from Dr. Lynda Wilson Nursing Leadership to Promote Global and Planetary Health in Spring 2018. Dr. Margaret Moss presented Indigenizing the Health Professions in Spring 2019.

Dr. Tony Paterniti was our speaker for our 2017 fall forum Far More Than The Lady With the Lamp: Myths and Reality Dispelled. Dr. Paterniti's connection to Florence Nightingale is an inspirational one; over time, Paterniti has devoted years of research to bring together a unique collection of memorabilia, books, artifacts, and letters that gives a fuller picture to the guiding light of the nursing profession.

In the fall of 2018, we had our first Fall Forum Convention Embracing the Art and Science of Nursing. Our Plenary speakers were Christie Griffin-Jones on An Interdisciplinary Rehabilitation Approach to Caring for the Oncology Patient and Mathew Schlueter on Nurse Advocacy: Caring for Transgender and Non-binary Patients. We also had 14 oral podium presentations and several posters.

Annually, we celebrate nurses week with a day-long line-up of inspirational speakers. In the spring of 2018, we learned about the History of Polio and saw an iron lung. This spring, we celebrated our ninth spring tea and were captivated by the Historical Perspectives on Reproductive Health.

As with all good years, I know I may have inadvertently left something off this long list of events! Know that I have appreciated everything you have done for our chapter! Stay tuned for notices about our upcoming meetings and events. Look for the call for abstracts for our fall 2019 Nursing Forum! Have a wonderful summer!
